Place matters
As of October 1, 2026, Wisconsin requires doctors treating patients here from a distance to hold a Wisconsin licence. This includes visits by video or phone.
Exceptions include emergency treatment or care in consultation with a doctor already treating you. State law also allows temporary permission to work here while applying for a full Wisconsin licence.
For that temporary permission, the person must work for a Wisconsin health care employer and apply within 30 days of starting that work.
They must have a valid licence from another state with no restrictions or investigation, and have applied for a full Wisconsin licence. Temporary permission ends when that application is approved or denied.
Ask the doctor or other health professional for their Wisconsin licence number. If they rely on temporary permission or an exception, ask to see the state document or rule that covers your visit.
